It enables complete order management, inventory control and warehouse management, quality control processing, advanced forecasting and material requirement planning (MRP), manufacturing, financial management, CRM, business intelligence, producer payroll, catch weight processing, and e-Commerce functionality in a single ERP system.” The ERP of a Big Mac ERP is not new to the food industry. One global food business began in 1940, with a little restaurant opened by two brothers in San Bernardino, California. They pioneered what they called the 'Speedee Service System,' establishing the first prototype for the modern fast-food restaurant. That single restaurant run by the McDonald Brothers turned into the largest food service retailer in the world. Business Insider published recently that, as of 2012, McDonald's has served over 250 billion people, cooking up more than 75 hamburgers every second of every day. Last year McDonald’s generated over $27 billion in revenue. Their 34,000 restaurants worldwide brought in total sales of $86 billion last year.

According to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), that makes McDonald’s the 90th-largest economy in the world. Big Macs are in over 120 countries.

In India, the first outlets opened in Delhi and Mumbai in 1996. Today McDonald’s is selling their fare to 650,000 customers daily in 40 Indian cities with some 217 restaurants. Supply Chain Serving 650,000 Daily Customers Run by Five People McDonald’s in India employs over 9,000 people, but the supply chain network, enabled by their unique ERP solutions can be managed by just five people across the country. McDonald’s supply chain is 100 percent outsourced.

In an interview on Logistics Week, Abhijit Upadhye, McDonald’s Senior Director-National Supply Chain for India revealed, “This is not just how McDonald’s operates in India, this is how McDonald’s works everywhere. So although we are growing at 30 to 40 percent every year, I don’t think we will increase our supply-chain staff for the next two or three years.” It took almost six years for the company to set up its entire supply chain, because they had to develop special menus, and then sign the deals with growers and meat suppliers to get the produce and products to their restaurants. These products are transported from the farms in a dedicated fleet of refrigerated trucks to the company’s Distribution Centers and moved quickly to over 200 McDonald’s restaurants across the country. Pull Supply Chain Keeps It Efficient McDonald’s continuing fiscal success is due in great part to the implementation of its pull-driven supply chain. The restaurants issue orders to the Distribution Center only when they need the supplies, and only then do the suppliers produce it. This complex supply chain is powered by a combination of IT systems.

They use SAP plus, as Vishal Sharma VP of RK Foodland, one of McDonald’s suppliers in the chain, detailed in Logistics Week, “our Distribution Centers are on RAMCO Marshall ERP with Cobra software. These systems are used to directly upload store orders. ”At the restaurant level, the ERP solutions also track day-to-day sales and enable restaurants to schedule staff, and serve up everything from soup to nuts, or cheeseburgers to soft-baked chocolate chip cookies. Food-centric ERP solutions are becoming available from more and more vendors, as the food industry sees the value of managing all the pieces of their business, from the farm to the table.
